Ports

Fremantle

Historic Fremantle is your gateway to Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Situated some 20 kilometres upriver from Fremantle on the banks of the Swan River, Perth is a growing, bustling city where soaring high rises coexist with sandstone buildings from the colonial era. The population in and around Perth makes up some 8% of Western Australia's population. And it's here that life moves at a slower pace, from the wonders of the bush to the wineries of the Swan Valley.

Christmas Island

Christmas Island is located in the Indian Ocean, 2600 km northwest of Perth, Australia. Its nearest neighbor is Java, 360 km away. British and Dutch navigators first included the island on their charts in the early 17th century. However, Christmas Island wasn't named until later that century when Captain Mynors from the East India Ship Company arrived on Christmas Day. The island was occupied by the Japanese during World War II and after the war came under the jurisdiction of Singapore. In 1957, Australia acquired the island and today it is an Australian Territory.

Yet, the essence of the city, a major trading center since the 18th century, remains unchanged. The port city of Vung Tau is a seaside beach resort located about two hours east of Ho Chi Minh City, with shopping, discos and a range of eateries. As the closest beach in the vicinity, Vung Tau is a daytrip from Ho Chi Minh City offering a retreat from the city heat.

Shanghai

For the past 15 years Shanghai has reawakened and regained its former glory as “The Paris of the East” in the 1920s and 30s. Its new skyscrapers seem to go up almost overnight, especially in the Pudong District, Shanghai's commericial center. And the air's electric with a sense of confidence and purpose.

Even the best museum, the Shanghai Museum, is but a decade old and already owns a collection of bronze that may well be the finest in the world. Still, there are a few more ancient sites worth your attention such as the pastoral, 16th century Yu Garden, an extraordinary maze of Ming Dynasty pavilions and bridges, encircled by an udulating dragon wall.
