Furthermore, the canals symbolize the city’s economic, political, and cultural development during the Dutch Golden Age, when Amsterdam was the center of world trade. Sailing through the Canal District is such a wonderful thing that it becomes an unforgettable experience. We didn’t make it up, we swear it! So much so that the District is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond the canal belt, the Dutch capital reinvents itself around the IJ Bay and Amstel River area, with the IJ River, what we would call the hipster area of Amsterdam.
